Lore and Story

Here you will be able to read the story of my characters!

An optional bit of story, if you want to know a bit more of Kalentan and his friend Sera before starting the story proper.

Chapter Zero

On the far western edge of the Republic of Brynn, a town covered in thick forestry, a design from the days before the nation's technological revolution that still remained, began to darken as the sun got lower and lower. Covered in a thick rain that had begun in the early morning and persevered through the entire day.Every evening the lights all across the town went on, rain or not. Removing the shadows cast down from the tree canopy above. At a glance this would seem normal, yet in all of the Northern Continent, this land was the only one who did not rely on magic to light their way. No, rather than the simplicity of torches or magic imbued stone, Steam was the energy source.
Yet despite the more sophisticated technology, those living far beyond the nation's capital were not so removed from nature and simplicity. The full steam of industry had not yet gripped all of Brynn, even as it’s technology became more commonplace.
The rain had just stopped, the cobblestone paths were gleaming in the light. Not a soul stirred out of their home, a quiet had taken hold… at least at a glance it would seem, yet elsewhere in the town, in a home of relative average size, it was anything but. The basement was of stone, dirt ground, with two pillars on opposite sides, otherwise there was little else was in there.Which made it perfect for what they wanted to do.The entire room was instantly lit up in hues of white and blue, the sound of crackling ice and then an explosion of icy vapor across the room. When it had settled, there was a wooden dummy on the ground, unharmed, yet the wall of the basement was now covered in ice.Kalentan, a light skinned fennes male with short black hair with red at their tips and ears and tails resembling that of a cat, had fallen to the ground, shaking his head he stood up and brushed the dust and dirt of himself.“...You missed,” he stated.Sera, A fair skinned human woman with short curly red hair and visible freckles upon her face, stood there with her arm stretched out, encased in ice. Her teeth were gritted and she was shaking, her attention solely at the wall of ice. Both were wearing casual attire, just some plain shirts, pants, and boots.“Sera?”“I know,” she said angrily as she brought her arm down, the ice vanishing from it. “I missed… yet again!”Kalentan walked past her and picked up the dummy and stood it back up in the middle. Then he turned around and held up his hands with two thumbs up. “You got this!”“Do I? I leave in the morning and yet I can’t hit the broad side of a barn,” she spoke with a defeated tone.“I mean… you hit this broad side of a… wall,” he said. She rolled her eyes.“Okay, I get it, but you’re just a late starter, that’s all,” he said as he rested one arm on the dummy's shoulder. “I mean, It’s been just what? Less than a month since a spirit gifted you with ice? I think most mages in other countries start much younger than that.”“Most other countries don’t have just one central place to learn to control magic, not to mention on the other side of the country,” she retorted as she leaned back against the cold stone wall. “Here I am basically self teaching with an element I didn’t much care for but have because that spirit was the only gods damn one in the region.”Kalentan tapped his foot. “If it makes you feel any better, you’re doing better magic then I can.”“Kalen… you don’t have any magic.”“Yet the statement is still true then!”“...I guess?”“Then there you go!”She took a step away from the wall. “I need to get some air.”Silently Kalentan watched as Sera went to the stairs and out of view. He looked back at the wall, the ice was starting to break down and scatter into nothing. Kalentan sighed and pushed over the dummy and then followed after her.Outside the air was cold, a gentle breeze moving through the streets. The trees canopy above swayed, the only sound one would find. Windows from the houses along the road showed vibrant life. None of the homes had much in the way of lawns, at most a small spot of land for little gardens and fences. The light poles that lit up the street had wiring going from one to the next, hardly visible in the night though plain as day in the sun.Kalentan had never once set foot outside the island of Brynn, much less the town he was born in. Yet others he was shown books that described the lands beyond, whose people have not adopted much of Brynn industry and thus overall rely on magic or in many cases simpler technology. There, further down the road, sat Sera on a bench, leaned back and just stared at the canopy above, nary a star that could be seen past it.“You think your bro is doing alright?” she asked as he approached, without taking her eyes away.“Knowing him, I imagine he is doing a lot of punching faces.”Sera laughed. “Yeah... And now I soon leave you too.”He shrugged. “It’s not great, but I don’t feel like you're down just because of the magic stuff and that.”
“It’s all of it,” she admitted but then elaborated. “But you know that whole thing with Laura.”
Kalentan held a palm up to his face. “Oh, dumb of me to forget. I forgot she had said no…”Sera looked down at the ground. “Yeah, it's a bit hard to do hours of magic with that weighing on my mind. Did I do something wrong? Honestly do you think I did?”He motioned for her to move and she did and he sat down on the bench next to her. Thankfully it had dried off well enough.“I mean… I can’t really say? Not like I’ve been in a relationship before,” he solemnly said. “Gods only know not due to a lack of trying. But I think you did alright. Just maybe it just wasn’t to be?”She sighed. “I really really wanted to go to the capitol together.”As they both knew quite well, mages were not looked at highly there, the Coalition, a state sanctioned group to study and train mages has not been popular, though the President and those before them viewed it as a necessary evil. It was to this day the only group willing to teach others magic in all the land, to go elsewhere would mean traversing unknown lands with not even extended family and friends to feel at home with.Kalentan clapped his hands. “You know what you can do? Go there and be the best gods damn mage there ever was. Don’t let anyone bring you down. You don’t deserve to be unhappy.”Sera couldn’t help but laugh again. “I’m sad but I’m not that down that I need that kind of prep talk. I ain’t giving up.”He smiled and gave her thumbs up again to a smile on her face.“Think you’ll visit?”He looked down the street at his house. “That is a… long journey and the folks still need my help with Eront gone traveling the continent.”“Someday?”He smiled. “Yeah, someday.”For the next little while they just sat there and talked about anything. She stood up and looked down at him. “Well, I ain’t going to get better sitting around here. Let’s get back to it.”Kalentan stood up as well and nodded, then together they set off back for the house. The next morning, Sera would set off for the capitol, with Kalentan staying behind for over nine years. Until one day, a while after his parents no longer needed his help, he decided that he too would go to the capitol.Though with lack of foresight, unaware that by the time he made that choice, turmoil building in the city was reaching a breaking point between The Coalition and the Machinists...

Characters

Here is just a few of the characters that will show up in Kalentan's story.

The world from which Kalentan hails from is known as Kosare. Specifically from a time period which would eventually be given the name, The 2nd Age of Heroes, for the events here more than any other time in the worlds history would define it's future. It is a world of mortals, magic, gods, and all other matter of creature.Like most worlds, Kosare has known it's fair share of conflicts, those from the planet itself and even celestial from beyond.Though the world was far more united in ages past, it has never been more divided. In a simplified fashion, the world can be looked at in two states, before the Seven Sinners and after. For it was the killing of the Goddess of War Jahura at the hands of mortals, comprised of Humans, Elves, Tenna and Fenna. This moment would lead to the removal of their native magic from those races, forcing them be gifted by Spirits to get even a fraction of it back. Most of all the once megacontinent was split into three. The four races were relocated to the northern continent. While the myraid other races, those that did not bring their sword to the gods and still faithful were relocated to Ishkara, the southern continent. And other manner of ungodly beings were sent to the Old World continent. It has been thousands of years since this event occurred. Wars have begun and ended, a new pantheon of Gods were born in the northern continent and almost waged war against the original gods. Mortals themselves still contest with one another, and other powerful beings still seek to make their own claims to the world. There is still much more to this story, hidden truths of the past, and a unknown future.
